  Climax for Six

Cassidy is ready to commit herself body and soul to all five of her men when their mating ceremony is cut short. Garret claims she’s no ordinary human but something that shouldn’t even exist.

As the pack tries to unravel the mystery around Cassidy’s birthright, they learn they aren’t the only wolf shifters inexplicably attracted to the little human. Corbin Rockford, Peter, and a new threat are all vying for her attention. If they don’t complete the mating bond soon, they could lose their mate forever.

Cassidy never expected to be put in a position where she’d have to choose between blood and true love. When another man shows up in Climax claiming to be her long-lost brother, she’ll have to decide if family ties are more important than a future with her five miners.

  Chapter One

“She’s a wolf,” he finally said, rising to his feet.

Garret had always believed Cassie to be one hundred percent human. She’d been innocent to their wolfen heritage until witnessing Patrick shift in the woods. Besides, there were no female shifters, so he never thought twice. Now he wasn’t sure what to believe. As soon as her blood pooled on his tongue, he tasted wolf. Strong and undeniable wolf blood. He began to question everything, his mind traveling in a web of directions. Was Cassie deliberately hiding something, playing them all along? Was she a threat to his pack? And what did it mean for his species if she really was a female shifter?

The mating bond would have to wait until he knew what he was dealing with. He couldn’t even think about sex now.

“What? No she’s not,” said Patrick.

“What’re you talking about?” asked Evan. “She’s a human girl. You know that as well as me.”

“Then why are we all impossibly attracted to her—the same as Rockford and that guy impersonating Scott?” Garret had developed his own fly-by-pants idea. If she was the first female wolf-shifter to be discovered, it only made sense she’d have pheromones to attract the opposite sex. Everything was coming together, and he hadn’t even considered the big picture until now.

“You’re scaring her, Garret. Whatever you think you know, you’re wrong.” Patrick helped Cassie to her feet. Her lust had fizzled away to nothing, and the acrid scent of her fear grew stronger by the minute. As alpha, Garret liked things in order. It was important he knew what was happening in and around his pack. He was still in a state of shock that Cassie’s true identity had gone unnoticed for so long.

She held Patrick around the waist, her cheek against his chest. Was she the enemy? Or was this fate in the making? He couldn’t imagine a slight thing like her being a threat, but he’d been wrong before.

Garret walked toward her, sizing her up, trying to read her body language and expressions. If she were one of his pack mates, he’d already know her thoughts and intentions. “What are you?”

“What do you mean? Am I suddenly a stranger now? It’s me, Cassidy!” She exhaled a staggered breath. “Are you trying to tell me you think I’m a wolf like you? Don’t you think I’d have figured that out by now?”

“I don’t know. Climax isn’t a destination. What kind of girl travels way out here to start over?” asked Garret. The tables had turned. It had been Cassie constantly questioning them, knowing something was amiss. Now Garret felt out of place, desperate to know the real identity of his mate.

“A girl who got a free house from a grandfather she never met.” She was getting feisty, her fists now planted on her hips as she spoke. It was one of the reasons he loved her. And he had to remember that. Regardless of the outcome, she was still his woman.

Matthew joined them. “Her grandfather…he lived in Climax. What if he was a shifter?”

“And mated with a human,” added Gar
ret. It was the only logical answer.

  “Exactly,” said Matthew.

Cassie shook her head. “Exactly what? You’re saying you think I have wolf blood in my veins? That my grandfather was some kind of a werewolf like you? And you got all that from a taste of me?”

“Not you. Your blood,” said Garret. “I’ve tasted other parts of you already without such a revelation.”

The whole pack laughed, bringing down the growing tension. Cassie appeared less than impressed.

“It’s bad enough I only know fragments of my childhood. Now you’re telling me I’m not even human?”

Garret reached out a hand for her to join him. Her turbulent emotions were real, nothing false about her aura. She was still his Cassie, the one he’d grown to love. The one his wolf called his mate. He’d accused her when she was probably just as shocked as he was.

Cassie left Patrick’s side and walked cautiously over to him, her big blue eyes bringing down his hackles. He pulled her tight to his body, leaning over to breathe in her familiar scent. There was no evidence she was a wolf. Her eyes were clear, no trace of a feral nature. Even in moments of passion, no fangs or fur had ever emerged. Either she had excellent control or he was way off on his assumption.

She thought Garret was teasing her, but when she saw the seriousness in his eyes, she knew he was telling her the truth. A truth that had to be wrong. Cassidy knew her body and what it was capable of. She was no she-wolf. Even worse than hearing she may have animal blood coursing through her veins was the fact Garret immediately became defensive. Hadn’t she just given up everything to be the mate for five werewolves? Hadn’t she taken that leap of faith and not turned back? She was insulted and hurt that his love didn’t run as deep.

“I’m not sure what it means,” said Garret. “We have no females. When our kind mates with a human, our boys have a strong chance of being born shifters. Girls are always human.”

  “What about me?”

“It may be like Matthew said. You could just be carrying the wolf gene because of your grandfather.”

  “Is that a problem?”

She looked up into his eyes, daring him to deny her after all the sacrifices she’d made to be with her men. She loved them unconditionally and irrevocably and expected the same in return.

His fingers bit into the soft flesh on her hips as he held her tight to his body. He had some sort of unnatural control over her. Just the sound of his voice or strength of his touch could arouse her effortlessly. “You’re angry, little one.” Garret nuzzled her neck, but she was in no mood for more love bites tonight.

Part of her wanted to solidify the mating bond immediately, yet a growing voice inside her demanded she wait until things were kosher before making a lifelong commitment.

“I’m confused.” It was hard enough to accept her miners being able to turn into wolves. Now she was expected to believe she was no different? Cassidy supposed nothing would change if she was just a carrier of the gene, and there was also the possibility Garret was wrong. He wasn’t mated so should never have tasted a human’s blood before. Perhaps all blood had the same qualities, making him jump to rash conclusions. By her age, wouldn’t she have characteristics leading her to believe she was something other than human? She was just Cassidy.

“Didn’t you know anything about your grandfather?” he asked.

She shook her head. “My past is a mystery to me. All I know is that my grandfather lived in that shack, secluded from the world until he died. I was planning to meet him, but it was too late. The only other blood relative I know of is my half brother.”

Garret nodded thoughtfully. “Climax does tend to draw shifters. It’s the lure of the old-growth forests and lack of civilization.”

“I only came because he left me his house. I’m human, Garret. I’m not strong, not fast, I freeze when it’s cold, can’t see in the dark, and I’m scared of everything.”

A set of hands massaged her shoulders from behind. She turned her head partially to the side to find a lock of Patrick’s red hair. He cooed in her ear. “Being human isn’t a prize,” he said. “Be whatever you are because I don’t want you to change. You’re either my little human or my little wolf. Makes no matter to me.”

She sank back against him, welcoming his acceptance, but Garret didn’t loosen his grip from her hips. It was a tug and pull, two hard cocks pressed against her from front and back. I won’t give in, not tonight. But she wanted to. She needed to connect with her men, to feel their unconditional affections after the shocking newsbreak. Now she could truly understand Patrick’s desperate need to be accepted for who he was, because she wasn’t even sure what she was.

The next day was business as usual at Gregor mining. All night and during the morning hours, the men had been unusually quiet. They never brought up the subject of her possibly having wolf blood again. She was starting to feel self-conscious, wondering if they were actually disappointed they weren’t fucking a human being. Had she been a novelty?

Cassidy picked up the phone and leafed through the telephone book. Too many worries were playing in her head like a broken record. She needed answers.

She dialled the local diner, the epicenter of local gossip. “Hi, this is Cassidy Lyons from the Gregor mine.”

“How are you, sweetheart?” asked the waitress.

“Good. I just had a couple questions I hoped you could answer.”

  “Oh?”

“My place on the edge of town, I inherited it from my grandfather. Did you know him at all?”

“Looking into your roots, are you?”

  “Something like that,” said Cassidy.

“Well, from what I recall and what I’ve heard around Climax, he kept to himself. It was odd how he never had a woodpile ready for winter, yet he never froze.”

“Yeah, I guess that is weird.”

The waitress chuckled. “Some said he wasn’t quite human, but maybe a vampire living off of tourists and such.”

“Funny stuff. People come up with the craziest ideas. Thanks for your help, anyway.”

Her call only confirmed something wasn’t right with her gene pool. Was her grandfather actually a werewolf like Garret?

The office was a mess. Since she’d been away for some time, there were serious backlogs to sort through. Garret was busy in the tower trying to get operations back to full capacity, and the miners were excavating nonstop to make up for lost time. At least the inspector was long gone. It was one small consolation in such a time of upheaval.

The best thing she could do was keep busy so her mind didn’t wander. There was so much to process—Peter still lurking somewhere in Climax, the whole mating bond to deal with, and the fact she could be part animal. Cassidy opened the first drawer and scooped out all the receipts shoved in haphazardly. She’d created such an organized system, but it went out the window as soon as she left the office. It made her realize she’d really found her place, and she didn’t want to leave Climax or Gregor mining. She had to make things right with her men, to convince them love was more powerful than anything they could face. They’d been through so much together already.

When she found a crumpled handwritten note in the receipt drawer, her curiosity was piqued. She flattened it out on the desk and read the faded words. I’ve found you, Cassidy. I’ll always find you. But where are you?

Her heart stopped for a moment, her body frozen in her seat. Those words held a unique power over her. It was the note they’d found on the door of her house soon after her arrival in Climax. She’d assumed it was from her half brother, but it was more than likely Peter stalking her. Would the note ring true? Would he always find her? She shuddered and shoved the note back in the drawer, losing her desire to organize the office. Cassidy still couldn’t believe a man she barely knew could be so obsessed with her. It wasn’t natural, wasn’t human. Was he watching her now, biding his time for his next strike?

  Cassidy sighed, s
uddenly wishing she wasn’t alone in the trailer. What did her future hold? Was this where she was supposed to be? Would she ever find peace with her five wolf-shifting miners?

The phone rang, making her flinch and pulling her from her thoughts. “Good morning, Gregor mining.”

“Sweet…sweet…Cassidy. I was worried about you.”

She rolled her eyes, not affected by his usual flirtation. “I’m sure, Corbin. You weren’t too concerned about my welfare when you sent your pack of wolves after us.”

She’d recognize Corbin Rockford’s voice anywhere—smooth and seductive, and deceptively innocent. It was branded on her mind from the many times he’d terrorized her. Why wouldn’t he leave her alone when she was obviously not interested? Did he just want the chance to make trouble for his competition?

“Well, seems Garret finally got the balls to tell you the truth. I was tempted to tell you myself on a few occasions, but I thought it best to stay out of the big reveal. I did, however, plan to be there to help you pick up the pieces.”

She wouldn’t fall for his lies, not this time. “Did you need to speak with someone here or not?”

“Cassidy Lyons. Your name rolls off my tongue.”

  “Stop playing games.”

“I can’t stop thinking about you. It’s driving me mad, actually. You’re like a sliver under my skin. At first you were an annoyance, but you slowly burrowed your way deeper. Now you’re all I can think about.”

“I’m taken, Corbin. I belong to the Gregor Pack, not the Rockfords. That won’t change. Not now. Not ever.”
